The proliferation of global geopolitical crises does not stop at the borders of continents. Recent disruptions to maritime shipping routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, have clearly demonstrated the vulnerability of international markets and the extreme interdependence of our economies. Despite the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran on June 17, 2026, the hesitation observed during the initial technical negotiations in Switzerland, the latest strikes in Lebanon, and the persistence of hybrid threats (cyberdisinformation) continue to fuel deep concern.<\/p>\n\n

For Africa, the impacts of instability in the Middle East are direct, tangible, and affect people\u2019s daily lives:<\/p>\n\n

  • Volatility in oil and gas prices, which is putting a strain on national budgets;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Rising shipping costs and worsening inflation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Rising prices of food and agricultural inputs (fertilizers), threatening food security.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    According to a joint report by the African Union, the African Development Bank, the UNDP, and the ECA, the continuation of this crisis could severely slow Africa\u2019s economic growth. In the face of these structural challenges, the Lom\u00e9 Conference aims to turn these vulnerabilities into opportunities for strategic repositioning.<\/p>\n\n
